ACS Announces 2018 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

2018 VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN
AFTON CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

Savanna Knapp, daughter of David and Stacy Knapp of Afton, has achieved the academic honor of Valedictorian for Afton Central School’s Class of 2018. She has maintained a seven-semester grade point average of 97.882%.

Throughout middle and high school Savanna has participated in Cross Country and Track, from which she has drawn inspiration to run her first half-marathon this coming May. She has maintained High Honor Roll, a place in the National Honor Society, and her seat as the Secretary of the Class of 2018 during her time in high school all the while completing an Associate of Science from Tompkins Cortland Community College.

Last year, Savanna became a life guard at Afton school where she now works part-time. More recently, she has become a part of Afton’s new “Yoga Thursdays” club for students and enjoys volunteering her time in the fourth grade and tutoring young students. Savanna is an avid plant enthusiast who keeps a collection of plants year-round and is planning her first vegetable garden for this spring. She will also be attending a medical internship in Mexico this summer. Savanna enjoys attending Calvary Baptist Church in Binghamton, and helping serve free lunches to the community every third Saturday of the month. In her spare time, she enjoys watching The Office.

Upon graduation Savanna plans to attend Binghamton University with her sister to pursue research and the study of Biology. After completing her Bachelor’s degree Savanna plans to pursue medical school.

Rachael Haynes, daughter of Paul and Pamela Haynes of Afton, is Salutatorian for Afton’s Class of 2018 with a seven-semester grade point average of 94.879%.

Hard-working, responsible, ambitious, honest, reliable, and committed are just a few of the adjectives that have been used to describe Rachael. She can be seen wearing many hats in school, her community and at home. Rachael has been a member of various extracurricular activities as well as taking on college courses and immersing herself in her community.

In school she can be seen working on homework, assisting a fellow student or crouching down to say hello or give a high five to an elementary student, putting a smile on their face almost as big as the one on her own. Rachael takes her academics seriously, aspiring to get good grades by studying hard and making sure she understands the concepts she is learning about. She encourages others to do their best and always strive to be better today than they were yesterday.

Rachael is a member of the National Honor Society, YES! Leads, and the Yearbook Committee, where she has been able to demonstrate true leadership by example to her peers. Rachael is a dependable member of our community and takes on every task with excitement. She has volunteered in her church, around the community and even across the country on mission trips. Rachael has been seen around the Afton community doing many things from painting fire hydrants or planting flowers to packing food baskets or playing with children on the floor in the church nursery. She especially enjoyed traveling to Tennessee and Georgia to help fix up the homes of families who could not have afforded it otherwise and volunteering her summers at Camp Good News, a local children’s camp.

Rachael would like to thank her parents, teachers, friends and family for always pushing her to strive to do her best at all things, and for always being there for her no matter what.  She would also like to thank Victoria Swislosky and her family for being like a second family to her, and always being willing to help her out in school or life.

Upon graduating from high school, Rachael will be attending Alfred State SUNY College of Technology in the fall to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science.  She plans to use this degree to acquire a job working as a crime lab analyst.  She will then be able to use her love of mysteries and analysis to analyze key pieces of evidence and assure justice for those wronged by a crime.
