School Closings

When school is closed for an emergency, it will also be closed for any other use that might have been scheduled for that day.  If, in your opinion as a parent, you consider your road conditions are too dangerous for school buses to travel, and the school is operating, we suggest that you exercise your right as a parent to keep your children at home.  There is no foolproof way to make a decision to operate or not operate school.

All students need to be well instructed by their parents as to what to do if they arrive home to find no one there.  The family shall be responsible for having emergency plans for school closings.

In compliance with New York State Education Commissioner's Regulation 155.13, Afton Central School has developed an emergency management plan.  This plan is available for public inspection in the district office.

Radio/TV Stations

When a decision has been made to close or delay school opening, the TV and radio stations are contacted by the school and these announcements are broadcast at frequent intervals.  If, for some reason, school should be dismissed early, the radio stations will make this announcement approximately one hour in advance.

WBNG offers a texting service, which will notify you via text message of school closings.  You can sign up at the following website,

School Messenger

The district will send an automated call to all parent/guardian home and cell phone numbers in the case of a school delay or closing. In the case of an early dismissal, the call will go out to the home, cell and parent/guardian work numbers. If you do not receive these calls, please notify either the Elementary School or Middle/High School Main Office, depending on which school your child attends.

In the case of a school closing or a delay, notification calls will begin at approximately 6:00 AM. In the case of an emergency or early dismissal, calls will begin as soon as possible.

School Messenger is a voice response system and needs someone to say "hello", or something, in order to start the message. Sometimes it will start the message on its own but only after a long pause.
