YES! LEADs is a group of high school students who have pledged to be good role models in their school and community and to remain drug and alcohol free.  The program is sponsored by Senator Akshar and Lourdes Hospital.

The eighteen Afton YES! LEADers were very active during the 2017-2018 school year. They started out the year with a day of training, which involved team building activities and developing classroom presentation skills. The YES! LEADers also learned information on the dangers of drugs, alcohol, peer pressure, and online bullying.

The YES! LEADers used their newly developed skills to provide a variety of activities for the Afton School Community and for local community members.  They kicked off these activities in the elementary school by facilitating a poster contest surrounding Red Ribbon Week, focusing on staying drug free.  The YES LEADers were then divided into small groups and were challenged with the task of creating fun and engaging lessons for students in grades 2-6 that focused on friendship skills, bullying, peer pressure, and resistance skills.  This year, the YES! LEADers presented to over 200 students in grades 2 through 6 during the month of March.

In addition to the classroom presentations, the Afton YES! LEADS hosted two free school events in December. We hosted a holiday cookie decorating event where students decorated hundreds of cookies while watching the movie “Polar Express”. We also hosted a holiday ornament decorating event where students got to make nine different ornaments to bring home. Students in grades K trough 6 attended both events.

We are very proud of our YES! LEADers for making a commitment to make good choices and for being good role models for our younger students.  They have worked hard to make this program a success and we look forward to another successful year in 2018-2019!
