FTON CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT DOOR ACCESS PROJECT FAQS Frequently Asked Questions The Afton Central School District has been working with Day Automation on a security project involving the installation of wireless door locks throughout the main building and bus garage. The district utilized the Smart Schools Grant to fund the project, which resulted in no cost to the district. The project will enhance building security resulting in a more secure instructional environment for both students and staff. Q.	What is a wireless door lock system? A.	A real-time wireless access control system allows for remote locking and unlocking of doors through a wireless connection, offering the convenience of a keyless entry while maintaining the security of an access control system; it integrates with existing access control systems using a hub and supports credential types like proximity cards, making it ideal for integration with the district’s current systems. Q.	Why are wireless door locks being installed? A.	School districts must provide more than just space for student education; they must also provide a safe and secure learning environment. Any safety strategy should allow students and staff to move about freely, while keeping unauthorized individuals out. Wireless locks increase the overall security of the building by restricting access to those with the appropriate access. Q.	How will this project increase the security of the building? A.	Wireless door locks offer enhanced security that significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access. Traditional lock and key systems are vulnerable to issues such as lost or stolen keys, unauthorized duplication, or lock picking. Authentication mechanisms provide a higher level of security, ensuring that only authorized individuals can gain access to specific areas of the building. In case of lost or stolen credentials, administrators can promptly revoke access remotely, mitigating the risk of unauthorized entry. Administrators can remotely lock or unlock doors, grant temporary access, or revoke access privileges, all from a centralized control panel. This feature proves especially useful during emergencies, scheduling conflicts, or situations that require immediate access adjustments. Wireless door locks also record and track access activity data, providing valuable insights into who accessed specific areas and when. Q.	Will this change any process for visitors? A.	This will not change the procedures when visiting the school. All visitors must sign in at one of the two entrances using the Raptor system in the office. When you arrive at the office, you must provide some type of government ID to the office staff, you will then receive a badge that must be worn while you are present in the school. Please note that if you do not have an ID, you will not be permitted to come into the building. Teachers will be called by the office staff and notified that you are here. For the safety of all students, parents/guardians must be escorted by a member of the staff throughout the school. This is to ensure safety for all individuals. We must insist on this procedure for safety and custodial reasons.
Q.	What parts of the building are included in the project? A.	This is a building-wide project, encompassing all instructional areas, common areas, offices, and the bus garage. This integrates fully with the existing external wireless access control system. Q.	How is the project funded? A.	The wireless door lock project is funded with the Smart Schools Investment Plan (SSBA) with no direct cost to the school district. The Smart Schools Bond Act (SSBA) authorized the issuance of general obligation bonds to finance improved educational technology and infrastructure to improve learning and opportunity for students by funding capital projects. The focus of Afton’s project is the installation of high-tech security features in school buildings and on school campuses, including but not limited to video surveillance, emergency notification systems, and physical access controls. The district’s Smart Schools Investment Plan can be found on the district website, www.aftoncsd.org, Documents/District/District Planning & NYSED Requirements. Q.	Who decided the scope of this project? A.	The district’s Administrative Leadership Team developed the scope of the project with input from key stakeholders, such as teachers, maintenance staff, and office staff. Q.	What is the proposed timeline for the project? A.	The installation phase of the project began just after winter break, with an estimated completion by Q.	What happens if the power goes out? A.	The door readers are all battery operated. The battery replacement will become part of the annual building maintenance. The receivers are POE (power over ethernet) which all have battery and generator backup. Q.	Can badges be disabled if lost? A.	Employees will immediately notify their supervisor when a proximity card (badge) is lost or stolen. The card will then be deactivated. Q.	Who do I contact if I have questions about this project? A.	Community stakeholders are encouraged to contact Ms. Stacy Huyck, Technology Coordinator, at Shuyck@aftoncsd.org with questions. The April Board of Education Meeting will address the final stages of the project.
